Serena MalaccoThe choreographer
Serena Malacco is a dancer and choreographer from Italy, with a Masters in Modern Literature from the Università Cattolica of Milan. She has been living in Paris since 2018. After a training in contemporary and classic dance in Milan and Brussels, Serena has danced since 2014 for, amongst others: Cindy Van Acker, Romeo Castelluci, Cie Les Gens d’Uterpan, Fabio Liberti, Ariella Vidach, Salva Sanchis, Cie Dehors/Audela, Helena Cerina, and Luca Silvestrini. Between 2017 and 2019 she choreographed and directed Ogni volta che mi viene in mente at the Teatro Nuovo of Ferrara, All Around Me at the Teatro Cantiere Florida in Florence, and created the choreography for Va’ per tre for Basilio Luoni at the Teatro Sociale in Como. Her work as a choreographer is supported by Ménagerie de Verre, the Anghiari Dance Hub, the Teatro Cantiere Florida, Milan’s Università San Raffaele, and Versiliadanza.

The choreography
The piece shows the need to daydream and wonder between euphoria and bewilderment, as we did when we were children, when being afraid was allowed. Like a throwback to dreamy and restless childhood; adults yet children. It is warm, a river flows in the distance, the sun is shining through some branches. Two women are lying in a meadow. Hope, memories and nostalgia intertwine in their melancholic and lively gestures. The two girls are remembering with desire the people that they barely touched,  faraway places. Here they are the little girls again. Here are their breathless races.

What are the highlights from your career up till now?
Master in Modern Literature, dancer for Cindy Van Acker, Romeo Castellucci, Cie Les Gens d’Uterpan, Fabio Liberti, choreographer at Teatro Nuovo in Ferrara, at Teatro Cantiere Florida in Florence, at Teatro Sociale in Come.

Why did you register for RIDCC?
It’s an extraordinary opportunity to show and share my work in an international contest.

What do you think RIDCC will bring you?
The most important thing will be to receive the reactions on my work from different professionals and from the public. I hope to have the possibility to find supports for my job as choreographer and for my new creation All Around Me (also for the long version of 45min).

What do you wish to cause with your choreography?
“With its wild fragility, with its desire for no object, with its past present, All Around Me stands on the border that mistakes heat and light, like the softness that takes in summer and the reverie of being just what we are.” What I’d like indeed is that people could discover again their fragility and strength, which is life, which is all of us.
